In From Whimps To Chimps we highlighted the social and cultural death spiral the Socialist government, headed by Prime Minister Zapatero, has set Spain on:

Remember Spain? They responded to their Madrid train bombings by voting Prime Minister Aznar out of office 3 days later. In the hours after the horrible bombings, PM Aznar said he believed the bombings to be the work of the Basque Separatists, ETA. Critics, playing into the hands of terrorists, and Socialists, using a national tragedy to their political advantage, said "No, it's al-Qaeda and the bombings are all Anzar's fault because he supports the War on Terror and WE'RE IN IRAQ!". The police quickly determined that the bombings were indeed the work of al-Qaeda. Then, al-Qaeda chimed in saying, "DAMN STRAIGHT WE BOMBED YOU AND WE'LL DO IT AGAIN IF YOU DON'T GET OUT OF IRAQ!" The Socialist party and their candidate, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, immediately pledged to pull out the troops if elected. Lo and behold, Zapatero was elected.

Once in office, Prime Minister Zapatero held true to his promise and pulled the Spanish troops out. As a result, al-Qaeda has not found a reason to bomb them again. But that may now be changing. The Socialists have instituted many reforms that really aren't in keeping with Osama bin Laden's vision for the world or sharia law. Zapatero's first big reform was to institute gay marriage. He said gay marriage was all part of his plan for Spain :

"We are expanding the opportunities for happiness of our neighbors, our colleagues, our friends and our relatives," he said. "At the same time, we are building a more decent society."

Ahh, the old temptation of building a more decent society. Prime Minister Zapatero's other big ideas building a decent society has been to remove mother and father from birth certificates and replace them with progenitor A and progenitor B, giving simians the same legal benefits and protections under the laws that humans enjoys. Once the simians have their rights granted the government must remove, them, at their cost, from all the zoos in Spain to wildlife preserves and then maintained there at the government's expense until death. Unless, of course, the separation from their zookeepers will be determined to cause too much emotional stress to the simians so the law requires the government examine it on a simian by simian case. Zapatero's party has also introduced legislation to dismantle hereditary nobility titles by letting girls be kings, dukes and baronets, but it doesn't allow boys to be queens, duchesses or ladies. After all that goodness and light, it seems Prime Minister Zapatero has finally gone too far with his decent society building:

Two days ago, more than a million people turned out in Madrid to protest the Spanish socialist government’s plan to negotiate with terror gang ETA.

What? You didn’t hear about it? That’s because a million people protesting against a far left government is not news, silly!

The Zapatero government is in trouble. They rode into office on a lie. The lie was that al-Qaeda bombed Spain out of retaliation for Spain's support for the War on Terror. That is not true because the evil dinner napkin-clad trolls that blew up the trains in Madrid began planning their tickets to Paradise in August of 2001. America had not even been attacked yet. The latest information is that ETA may have helped al-Qaeda with the Madrid's bombings which means the former Prime Minister Anzar was not lying to his citizens. If memory is right, PM Anzar, as well as the police, thought ETA was involved because of the colors and styles of the bags used to carry the bombs. The bomb mechanisms turned out to have al-Qaeda hallmarks. Now Zapatero wants to play nice with ETA and have peace talks with the guerrillas. Not the simian gorillas in Spanish zoos that he wants to extend legal rights to but the guerrillas who are men and women and have murdered over 800 of their fellow progenitor A and progenitor B Spaniards.

Socialism has always been about lies. It's good to see some Spaniards aren't buying them any more.

A certain monarch who shall remain nameless has proved completely ineffective in his position and has shown a clear misunderstanding of his role in society. (I don't know much about his sisters, but there was a lot of talk among orthodox Catholics when the infanta Cristina got married in Church in a white suit instead of a dress. She was also bare-headed, i.e. no veil/hat/head-covering.) Exactly who should bring about this dynastic shift?

As for the General Franco, make no mistake, Zapatero has spoken about how his Socialist father was treated by the Franco regime and has made it obvious that he intends to undo all of the General's work. It's a clear case of Revenge being a dish best served cold.

There are other Bourbons than the line of Juan Carlos. Indeed the legitimate heir to the French throne (the Duc d'Anjou) is a Bourbon, naturally. Furthermore, he is Spanish. Furthermore again, he is Franco's grandson!

Perhaps if he is given the Spanish throne he would give up his French one, leaving it to the Comte de Paris, the Orleanist pretender. But naturally that would be against the Salic law, not to mention undesirable.

Oops, Mrs. P, I meant Zapatero's paternal grandfather. Zapatero was born to an affluent family with a long history of left-wing politics. His paternal grandfather, Juan Rodríguez Lozano, was a Freemason and Republican captain who was killed by Nationalists during the Spanish Civil War when Zapatero's dad was 8 years old.

As for Prince Felipe, look up "Eva Sannum". His taste in women is similar to Charles' choices. His wife Princess Letizia was first married to her teacher Alonso Guerrero in a civil wedding, not a Church one (I don't know why she did that, but that's how Prince Felipe was able to marry her in Church - the Church doesn't recognize civil marriages of baptized Catholics). Mr. Cusack, thank you for the clarification regarding the Bourbon line. A couple of questions for you:
I've heard contesting claims re: the French throne (e.g. he's illegitimate because his parents' marriage was annulled, Juan Carlos doesn't like him, etc.) What kind of man is the Duke of Anjou?
Also, how about a United Kingdom of France and Spain? (It's a long shot, but fun to think about. After all, if Aragon and Castile could unite to eject invaders...)

While I'm certainly in no position to be able to say what kind of man Don Luis is personally, he has, so far as I know, conducted himself publicly with dignity. He has, of course, married a commoner and is now living with his wife in Venezuela where he is a banker (having previously worked for BNP-Paribas). Naturally, being the head of a royal house, he is a fairly high-ranking knight of the Order of Malta (Bailiff Grand Cross, if I recall correctly).

Juan Carlos is no fan of Don Luis, supposedly because he maintains his claim on the throne of France. The reason for this discord may be because if one accepts Don Luis' claim of the French throne, one would be forced by logic to also conclude that he has a much better claim to the Spanish throne.

As for illegitimacy, it is true that the parents of Don Luis obtained a civil divorce in 1982 and that the Church annulled the marriage altogether in 1986. However, the Church views the offspring of any marriage, even if later proved invalid (and thus merely a 'putative marriage', to be legitimate if one or both of the parties entered into the marriage in good faith, thus Luis is the legitimate offspring of his father.

Just to clarify, Juan Carlos' dislike of Don Luis is supposedly for Don Luis' claim to the throne of France. I don't believe Juan Carlos has ever made any public claims on the French throne, though he has good grounds to do so (better grounds than the Comte de Paris, after all).

And I don't think a United Kingdom of France and Spain would be a worthwhile effort. They should be sovereign kingdoms under the Pope and Emperor.

There are several prophecies, such as those of Nostradamus and Eastern Orthodox saints, which suggest that the idea of a Franco-Spanish Kingdom may not be that far fetched.

Nostradamus' prophecies must be interpreted in a Christian key, for they herald the second coming of Jesus Christ, which is also their end point. One of them appears to announce the restoration of Monarchy in France:

The "Cross" ("croix") is a clear symbol of the undivided Church, whose reunification will be "accomplished" ("accomply") most likely through war, as implied by the "peace" ("paix") that follows war. This peace will be brought about through a miraculous "divine" ("diuin") intervention - by the "word" ("verbe") of God.

The nostradamian prophecy is similar to an Eastern Orthodox prophecy of Methodius of Olympia (or Patara/Patares in Greek), an Orthodox saint and bishop, written in the early IV century. It is different from a so-called Pseudo-Methodius prophecy, written much later in the VII century, and completely different in contents. This prophecy announces the fall of the West ("the sun-set land") and especially of Rome ("the city of the seven hills") under the "Ismaelites" (Muslims), its liberation by the "blonde nation" (the Russians) and their subsequent stay in Rome for 15 years, period during which the "dormant snake" (an Orthodox symbol of Catholicism, as opposed to Islam, an active snake) will be crushed, forced to shed its heresies, and to return to Orthodoxy. Then, after these terrible events, the prophecy announces the freeing from under "Ismaelites" (the Muslims) of Byzantium (Constantinople) through the bloodiest war ever, whose victory will be decided in favor of a pan-European Christian coalition under the command of King "Philippe the sixth" by the divine intervention of angelic hosts. They will be conveying Christ's message, shouting out loud, making the earth tremble in a great earthquake, bringing the war to an end for the greater glory of God and of His Christ. After the re-establishment of the freed Eastern Roman Empire (also known as Byzantine) with its capital in Constantinople, the various churches, especially the Catholic one, seeing the great wondrous signs of God manifest in this terrible battle, will return to the unaltered Orthodox faith, restoring the undivided Church of the first millenium.

It is worth noting that St. Methodius' prophecy supports the nostradamian one, not only in what concerns the reunification of the Church accomplished through the great sign of the "divine word" ("diuin verbe"), but also about the fate of France and Spain. In St. Methodius's prophecy, the glorified leader of the pan-Christian coalition is nobody other than King "Philippe the sixth", who cannot be any other but that of either Spain or Belgium, the only two Christian kingdoms with Philippe's in their ruling houses and across their histories. To interpret this unique part of the prophecy - the only name in the prophecy -, the King of Spain is more likely to lead a pan-European coalition than the King of Belgium - a less militarily mighty country and also less likely to be involved in a war against the Muslim invaders by virtue of its position on the map.

If we corroborate the Orthodox prophecy about the glorious King "Philippe the sixth" (of Spain, if I may add) with the nostradamian one announcing the unification of Spain and France, it is very likely that the next King of Spain Philippe VI, currently Prince Felipe of Asturias, will become the King of France, thus restoring the Bourbons back on their ancient Throne. The creation of the Franco-Spanish Kingdom will be around the time of a "great disaster and combat very bitter" according to Nostradamus, a war none other than the one for Byzantium, the bloodiest ever according to St. Methodius' prophecy. Therefore, the glorified hero of the war for Byzantium, the future King Philippe VI of Spain, will have the best moral credit to be entrusted with the Throne of a France, very likely, also victim of the "great disaster". For a Christian-Muslim clash is unlikely to have taken place only in Byzantium, when we witness every day the increasing Islamic unrest and fundamentalism across the Middle East and Western Europe. Both St. Methodius' and Nostradamus' prophecies suggest such a war in the West, the first through an invasion of the "Ismaelites" in the "sun-setting land" and in Rome, the latter through a metaphoric image - "no heart will be so hardy as not to tremble" due to a "great disaster near." With France invaded by the Muslims, King Philippe VI will have the chance to lead the liberating campaigns for both Spain and neighboring France, thus earning himself the moral right to be entrusted with the French Crown.

I have to say this scenario is Very unlikely. Post-Tsarist Russia isn't exactly Christianity's best hope, given the unholy combination of Communism-inspired secularism and widespread abortion leading to negative population growth rates(I read somewhere that in Russia today 3 babies are aborted for every 1 that is born). Orthodoxy is making a very slow comeback, and it's not as influential as it was in the days of the Tsars. Maybe the blonde nation is another. (The Danes? Germans? Poles? The possibilities are endless.)

"Filip al saselea" is the Romanian version of "Philippe the sixth." King Philippe is prophesized as the leader of a pan-European coalition of 18 nations ("18 natiuni" in Romanian) not just by St. Martyr and Bishop Methodius of Patara ("Metodie al Patarelor" in Romanian), but by other Orthodox saints as well, such as Grigorie of Jordan in 1868 ("Vedenia pustnicului Grigorie" - "the vision of hermit Grigorie").

As about the meaning of the "blonde nation" ("neamul cel plavan" in Romanian) in St. Methodius' prophecy, I confess I had similar difficulties as you did, Jacobite, in interpreting it. Therefore, I had to rely on the interpretation of the divinely inspired St. Andrew Fool-for-Christ ("Sfântul Andrei cel nebun pentru Hristos" in Romanian), who sees it as referring to the Russians. This interpretation is very likely correct, given the strong resurgence of both Orthodox (see http://www.interfax-religion.com/ ) and monarchical (see http://www.newtimes.ru/eng/detail.asp?art_id=982 ) sentiments in post-communist Russia. Let us not forget that throughout all of its history, Russia has always been a monarchy, be that either Christian or Red Atheist, with the power largely concentrated in the hands of a single man.

There are a number of prophecies announcing the restoration of Monarchy in Russia, including, some believe, the Book of Revelation (Apocalypse).

Starets Lavrentii (+1950):

Schema-Archimandrite Feofan related that Batiushka Lavrentii would joyfully say, with a smile: “The Russian people will repent of deadly sins: that they allowed ... [antichristian] impiety to hold sway in Russia; that they did not defend God’s Anointed Tsar, the Orthodox churches and monasteries, and all that is holy and sacred in Russia. They despised piety and came to love demonic impiety. But there will be a spiritual upheaval! And Russia, together with all the Slavic nations and lands, will constitute a mighty Tsardom. She will be governed by an Orthodox Tsar, by God’s Anointed One. Because of him, all schisms and heresies will vanish away in Russia. There will be no persecution of the Orthodox Church. The Lord will have mercy on Holy Russia because the dreadful time preceding that of antichrist has already taken place in her. Even antichrist himself will fear the Russian Orthodox Tsar - Samoderzhets [Tsar - Autocrat]. But all the other nations, save only Russia and the Slavic lands, will be ruled by antichrist and will undergo all the horrors and torments written of in Holy Scripture. Regarding the return of a tsar, Archbishop Theophan of Poltava wrote in 1930, "The coming of Antichrist draws nigh and is very near. The time separating us from him should be counted a matter of years and at most a matter of some decades. But before the coming of Antichrist Russia must yet be restored-to be sure, for a short time. And in Russia there must be a Tsar forechosen by the Lord Himself. He will be a man of burning faith, great mind and iron will. This much has been revealed about him." 21

When so many of the predictions of righteous Russian sufferers have come to pass, all their words must take on added importance. A theme repeated by many is that the restoration of Russia will be temporary. It will be a "flowering before the end," a brief return to true Christian beliefs and practices. And it will presage a wave of worldwide repentance prior to the appearance of Antichrist.

Heavenly Silence

Father Seraphim Rose linked Revelation's "heavenly silence" to Russia's period of quiet before the final storm: "In the book which most thoroughly describes the events to occur at the end of the world, the Apocalypse of St. John the Theologian, at the opening of the seventh seal, which precedes the final plague to come upon mankind, it is said that there was silence in heaven for the space of half an hour (Apoc. 8:1). Some have interpreted this to mean a short period of peace before the final events of world history-namely…when the preaching of world-wide repentance will begin with Russia." 22

This repentance is a sign that evil, regardless of its apparent power, is not stronger than good. Satan can and will be defeated, but only by those who are willing to suffer for Christ. Those who endure crucifixion for the Lord's sake will certainly be resurrected. "It is a law of the spiritual life that where there is Golgotha - if it is genuine suffering for Christ-there will be resurrection," Father Seraphim Rose assures us. "This resurrection first of all occurs in human hearts, and we do not need to be too concerned what outward form it might take by God's will. All signs point to the fact that we are living at the end of the world, and any outward restoration of Holy Orthodox Russia will be short-lived." 23

The world at large gloats over communism's apparently untimely end and rewards itself with complacency. It has no idea that the fractured societies left in communism's wake are but decoys, left to divert suspicion from the true arena of conflict. The revolution is not over, nor have we in the West "won," for the battle is ultimately spiritual in nature.

The restoration of the French Monarchy is clearly implied by France's new capital being moved to the ancient coronation town of Rheims: "Constantinople and Jerusalem will be inhabited by the combined powers of Russia and the others. At the division of Turkey almost all will go to Russia, and Russia with the united forces of many other States will take Vienna, and about 7 million native Viennese will remain under the house of the Hapsburgs, and there the territory of the Austrian empire will be constructed. To France for her love for the Mother of God, the holy Madonna, will be given up to 17 million Frenchmen with its capital in the city of Rheims, while Paris will be completely destroyed…"

For those to come during the last days of this world

At about year seven thousand from the Creation, the Ismaelitans and Agareans, those descending from Hagar and Ishmael (who are Turks and Tatars), will surround the walls of Byzantium (Constantinople) and rally all their relatives in the city on the seven hills. And these warring with each other will draft the priests and the monks in the armies and none of them will save themselves (all of them will perish in war).

And without a worthy man left to be crowned emperor over the earth, a sinful shameless woman will reign. And she will defile the Holy Churches and Chalices of God. And standing in the middle of Constantinople she will preach, saying out loud: "Who is God besides me and who will oppose my empire?" And suddenly the Constantinople will tremble and will sink altogether to perdition and only the dry hills will be seen. And sailor passing through Constantinople will say: "Here was the famed Constantinople praised in the entire world!" And so another one will reign in Thessaloniki for a short while, after which it, too, shall sink and then Smyrne and Cyprus shall sink also under the sea in a storm.

And then the Antichrist will reign who will perform wondrous and strange magic, so many that many shall be led astray from the true faith and if he could even the chosen ones. And he will exalt and praise the Jews and will uproot God's churches and turn them into pagan temples. And there shall be famine and plague throughout the entire world. And the waters will dry up, the rivers and the lakes will dry up and the rain will not grow harvests on earth. And the much cursed one will rule three and a half years.

And then the year shall pass like the month and the month like the week and the week like the day and the day like the hour and the hour like the minute, for the sake of God's chosen servants. And at the end of the three and a half years, God will rain fire over the earth and will burn it three cubits deep. Then the earth shall cry before his God and Maker, saying: "I am clean before Thee, o Lord, and there is no fault within me." Then the sky like a scroll shall roll up and the angels shall blow the trumpets and at their voices the dead shall resurrect. And the righteous ones shall sit at the right hand of the Heavenly King, while the sinners at His left. And the righteous ones shall inherit the heavenly rewards, while the sinners the eternal toils of the everlasting fire and of the sleepless worm, together with the Antichrist's servants who had deceived them.

And may He make us worthy of the eternal rewards, which God prepared for those who love Him, Whose glory, honor, and worship are for ever and ever. Amen.

In the next year or so we should have a first confirmation of whether Nostradamus' prophecies are true or not, including those mentioned in the first message about the restoration of Monarchy in France under a Spanish King, who is said will unite Spain and France under his sceptre.

Quatrain VI 54 is the key to dating all of his Nostradamus' prophecies and the one which will provide us with a reality check of their validity.

The quatrain speaks quite clearly of an Arab invasion in Northern Africa -- in Tunisia, Algeria (with its city of Fez) and Morocco, whose King the Arabs will capture. This invasion is to take place in the year "1607 of the Liturgy." If "of the Liturgy" means "since the very first Liturgy," i.e. that celebrated in memory of Christ immediately after His Ascension to the Heavens in the year 33 AD, the year 1607+33=1650 AD should have already witnessed this Arab invasion. A brief recourse to history proves nothing of this sort happenned in any of the three North African countries in 1650. Thus, the expression must mean "since the Liturgy as I know it" - that is, as it was known in Nostradamus' lifetime.

Which Liturgy, though? The Catholic One or the Orthodox One? The Orthodox One used during the vast majority of the year is that of St. John Chrysostom. He had finished It by 397 when he leaves Antioch due to his election as Archbishop of Constantinople, according to Encyclopaedia Catholica: "It is true that most of these homilies were preached at Antioch (387-397) before he went to Constantinople. It would seem, then, that the Liturgy of St. Chrysostom was in great part that of his time at Antioch, and that he introduced it at the capital when he became patriarch." If we add 1607 to 397, we get 2004, clearly not a correct year, as none of these foretold events occurred in 2004.

Thus, it follows that "the Liturgy" must mean the Catholic One, That of St. Ambrose used in the West since "about 400" AD according to the same Encyclopaedia: "By the fifth century we come back to comparatively firm ground, after a radical change. At this time we have the fragment in Pseudo-Ambrose, "De sacramentis" (about 400. Cf. P.L., XVI, 443), and the letter of Pope Innocent I (401-17) to Decentius of Eugubium (P.L., XX, 553). In these documents we see that the Roman Liturgy is said in Latin and has already become in essence the rite we still use." If we add 1607 to "about 400", it follows that next year or so we should have a clear confirmation of whether or not Nostradamus is a legitimate prophet.

Even if this quatrain does not become fulfilled next year or the following, it doesn't mean that Nostradamus was a charlatan. It may simply mean that my interpretation key is wrong and that by "of the Liturgy" he may have meant something different.

Regardless, Nostradamus is not a saint of the Church and as such his prophecies carry nowhere nearly as much credibility as those of St. Methodius of Patara, St. Brigitta of Sweden, or St. Seraphim of Sarov, which speak of a Spanish Bourbon King and of the French Monarchy. However, if this key prophecy does become true next year or so (by 2008 at the latest), it logically follows that since even somebody much less than a saint was inspired by God with such a proven gift of prophecy, even more so then God's saints must be believed and their prophecies must be expected to become reality, for the strenghtening of the faith of those who hear them and see them fulfilled.

Since the peoples of these three countries are mostly Arabs, "the Arabs" might not mean Arab invaders from abroad, but rather local Arabs (i.e. extremist Arabs, Islamists) staging a coup d'etat, an Islamist revolution like the Iranian one, in which the King of Morocco will be captured and democracy ruled out.
