Happy Chanukah. Thank goodness it's an eight day festival. Sorry to overlook this important holiday. I'm going to make potato latkes. Can any of our readers enlightened us with stories of special things they do to celebrate?
A Bit of Housecleaning and Thanks :
The brains (Mr. P.) of this operation is very busy writing a campaign due on the 15th. His posts will be spotty at best. So you are stuck with my potty (as in trivial) posts. Tomorrow are holiday drink recipes including 'Old Mummsie's Dynamite'. Get ready to add yours to the mix and we can make one of those virtual trash can punchs that were so popular at the proper schools. For the record, I never touched the stuff.
A hearty Thank you to blogger Lynn S. and her blog, Reflections in D minor. Because of her linking to Mr. P's post , "Are All Artists Left-Handed", we are getting alot of action. So go and take another look. People are trying to bend their minds around this one. Blimpish has recently added alot of food for thought. Thank you Lynn.
And a big Thankyou to blogger Don of Mixolydian Mode. Not only did he nominate us for, "Best New Blog" for the Wizbang awards, (WOW) he gave us one of his own. The judges at Wizbang found us not up to snuff. Don, generous man that he is, was not swayed by their jugdement and awarded us "Best Blog By A Married Couple". Considering we are the only blog by a married couple it came as great relief to find we are considered the best as well. Thank you Don.
Also, because it is not Advent without gingerbread, I am posting a recipe from my great-grandmother's file. The directions are few because both she and the lady who wrote the recipe expected their female descendents to know their way around the kitchen. I have not made it but my mother does recall it and says it is very nice. We do not know how this recipe came to be in my great grandmother's file, perhaps it was printed in the paper.
Ex-President Taft's Grandmother's Perfect Gingerbread
1/2 cup sugar
1/2cup molasses
1/4 cup butter, softened (use unsalted)
1 egg (large)
1/2 cup sour milk (use buttermilk or sour whole milk with a 1/2 - 1 teaspoon vinegar)
Sift together the following :
1 teaspoon soda (baking soda)
1 1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ginger (ground)
1/4 teaspoon cloves (ground)
Moderate oven. Shallow pan.
Translation: Preheat oven to 350. Grease a 9 X 9 square pan. Alternately mix the wet and dry ingredients together wih a spatula. Pour mixture into the greased baking dish. Bake 25 - 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with crumbs attached. (Or until it springs back when touched. )
We have lost quite a bit of common sense with feminism.
