From the highlights of the Secretary-General's spokesman's noon briefing (2nd link):

* The Secretary-General has learned with great sadness of the human tragedy that took place today in Bagdad when a large number of pilgrims, many of them women and children died in the crush of a crowd crossing a bridge over the Tigris River.

The Secretary-General expresses his deepest condolences to the Government of Iraq and to the families of the bereaved.

The Secretary-General's Special Representative for Iraq, Ashraf Qazi, also issued a statement on the tragedy. In it he expresses the UN's sympathy and solidarity with the Iraqi people at this time of national mourning, and that the United Nations is ready to provide all the help possible to the Iraqi people.

* The Secretary-General is deeply saddend by the loss of life and large-scale destruction wrought by Hurricane Katrina along the United States Gulf Coast.

He extends his sincere condolences to all the victims and their families.
